Welcome from the Editor
Welcome to the first issue of The Perinatal Project’s “weekly news clips” newsletter—a free reference service covering national and international news about pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. It’s a one-stop source for the current buzz and the latest research and policy debates in this field. Our readers are professionals and advocates in the maternal-child wellness field, as well as expectant and new parents. Did you know that the U.S. ranks an embarrassing 27 among industrialized nations for infant mortality? (We’re worse at keeping our babies alive than 26 other nations of the world, including Singapore, Slovenia, Israel, Ireland, the Czech Republic, the UK, Canada, Cuba…and the list goes on.) Did you know that race is still a major determinant of whether of not an American newborn will survive, with death rates of babies born to black mothers twice that of babies born to whites? Did you know that three in 10 American mothers now give birth by cesarean section surgery, with a sharp, continuing rise in numbers over the past two decades? Did you know that our postpartum depression rates are disproportionately high, and our breastfeeding rates still quite low? We want to bring babies into the world in a healthier, happier, more civilized way. We want women to have safer, saner births—and better support afterward. The Perinatal Project (www.perinatalproject.com) is an independent, web-based initiative aimed at sharing new information and building new networks among parents and professionals. We believe that information is power—whether you’re a mother, a health care provider, an activist, or all of the above. This newsletter and the website are made possible by select advertisers whose services or products are related to pregnancy, birth, or parenting.
